West Somerset Council (WSC) has been reviewing ways to secure the future of the much valued Watchet Library in light of financial pressures on Somerset County Council (SCC).

Watchet Town Council (WTC) had previously responded positively to SCC’s call for the creation of a Community Library Partnership, on condition that the freehold of the building was transferred to them.

Having reviewed all the relevant documentation a freehold transfer of the building is viewed as the most appropriate way of enabling library services in the area to continue via a Community Library Partnership between WTC and SCC.

A decision has therefore been taken to transfer the freehold of the Watchet Library Building from WSC to WTC.

Cllr Martin Dewdney, Cabinet Member for Resources and Central Support, said: “We are pleased that through this transfer, WSC can support SCC and WTC in securing the long term future of a much valued community service.”

Detailed terms will be finalised by WSC’s Asset Management team in consultation with the Cabinet Member for Resources and Central Support, SCC and WTC.
