    Impressive, inspiring, practical and helpful are just some of the comments on two councils’ hands-on approach to help tourism businesses.

    West Somerset and Sedgemoor District Councils are delivering training on the COOL Rural Tourism Training Toolkit - a series of easy-to-follow guides to help new and existing tourism operators make the most of what they offer and develop strong business processes.

    Training sessions are due to be held at Highbridge Enterprise Centre in Highbridge on February 9 and at The Beach Hotel in Minehead on February 10.

    For just £10 plus VAT per delegate, the courses are aimed at helping local businesses to get up to date with key tools such as using social media and effective marketing.

    The Councils have secured funding to be able to offer the heavily subsidised training at venues across both districts.

    Effective communications is just one of the modules in the toolkit and looks at producing newsletters, using social media to best advantage and creating strong marketing messages. There’s also advice on relevant legislation, how to cope with “mystery” visitors and understanding and defining what makes a place special.

    Although the modules are aimed at rural tourism businesses, non-rural operators will also find some relevant information on topics such as sustainability and marketing.

    Delegates who attended a course in November were full of praise for the event. Anna Toeman, from Porlock Visitor Centre, said: “I hadn’t come across the COOL Rural Tourism Toolkit before and it was great to have such a comprehensive introduction to it.  It is certainly an impressive piece of software and to be guided through it by the person who wrote it was very inspiring.  It was helpful to be encouraged to think about the business in a new way or from a new point of view. I shall certainly be making use of the toolkit and have already downloaded it for Porlock Visitor Centre.”

    David Binks, of Court Farm Holiday Cottages, said: “Having first learned about the toolkit last year, I found this course more practical and helpful in learning how to apply specific modules, particularly in my case, to improving my accommodation website both technically and in content. Highly recommended.”
