Programme launches to support tourism and hospitality

    Thursday 07 September 2017

A new training programme is about to get under way in West Somerset to equip people with the skills needed in the district’s main industry of tourism and hospitality.

The two-week course is part of a wider project - West Coast 360 - which brings partners and employers together to raise skills and prospects for people in hospitality and tourism.

It will provide those taking part with a qualification – and all-important hands-on, practical experience, culminating in a cook-off to demonstrate what they have learned.

West Coast 360 plans to offer support to the future workforce, the current workforce and local businesses through skills and training opportunities as well as exciting events.

The first project is the Hospitality and Tourism Pre Employment Programme aimed at those seeking related opportunities.  The first week will focus on applicants developing essential customer services skills as well as provide an introduction to the hospitality industry.

Applicants will also gain certificates in Food Safety Level 1, Health and Safety in the Workplace Level 1 whilst the second week will involve candidates developing practical experience in a kitchen.

Applicants’ skills will be put to the test on the final day when they will be demonstrating the skills they have learned by working in small teams and cooking for their friends and family.

A number of partners, including Jobcentre Plus, are supporting the project with Butlin’s and The Beach Hotel providing dedicated trainers as well as use of their facilities. West Somerset College’s catering facilities will also be used and Acacia Training will be providing the support for the first week of the course. Many local employers and food producers have offered to donate food and drink to support the event. This includes; Arthur David and Co, Lidl, Morrison’s and Tesco.

West Coast 360 is part of the Enterprising Minehead Project which was recently successful in securing funding from the Hinkley Point C Community Impact Mitigation Fund. If anyone is interested in finding out more about the project should call Emily Wishart on 01984 635219 or email ewishart@westsomerset.gov.uk.
