The coach park is in a prime location near the seafront at the start of the main shopping thoroughfare and adjacent to the West Somerset Railway’s Minehead terminus, one of the seaside resort’s best-loved visitor attractions.
Cllr David Sanders, West Somerset Council’s Lead member for Economic Regeneration and Tourism, said: “This is a welcome development for tourism in Minehead. The coach park is already being used by tour operators bringing visitors to Minehead and, now that the landscaping is complete, it will become a pleasant point of arrival for people coming to enjoy all the town has to offer.”
The new coach park came about as part of a nearby Morrisons supermarket development on the Minehead Enterprise Park industrial estate. This included the construction of a coach park on council-owned land adjacent to the current SCC highways depot. However, a land swap negotiated by the council with partners Somerset County Council allowed the new coach park to be sited in a better location for visitors closer to the town’s shops, attractions and popular promenade.
The new construction was financed by Morrisons using the money it had saved by not having to provide a coach park as part of its development.
Cllr Sanders added: “First impressions count and now visitors can be dropped off and picked up at a newly landscaped, purpose-built parking area close to the heart of the town.”
