These inspections help officers to gather information to assess businesses under the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme.
The two councils have been in a formal partnership for three years and have a single officer structure – the One Team.
Environmental Health and Food Safety officers completed over 670 physical inspections of premises and made contact with over 1000 food businesses across Taunton Deane and West Somerset over the year.
A total of 25 rescore inspections were also completed. Food business operators are able to request a rescore in order for a reassessment to be made under the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. Where a business receives a poor rating, they have one opportunity to be reassessed under the scheme.
Erica Lake, Environmental Health Manager for Taunton Deane Borough Council and West Somerset Council said: “This number of visits is a great achievement for our team and demonstrates the high level of contact that we have with food businesses in the Taunton Deane and West Somerset area.”
Local Authorities are now able to charge for rescore inspections and officers are currently working with other Somerset council’s to investigate levels of charging which could come into force in spring 2018.
