West Somerset Council raised the flag honouring the Armed Forces on Monday at a ceremony attended by serving members of the forces, many veterans, councillors, members of the public and council staff.

Chairman of the Council, Cllr Bruce Heywood, raised the flag outside West Somerset House, maintaining the tradition set in previous years.

Poor weather failed to dampen the spirits of those attending, including those who had served in World War Two.

Cllr Heywood led the tributes along with Chief executive Penny James who said: “Our Armed Forces continue to command our respect for their professionalism and dedication.  Flying the flag and gathering here today is our way of showing our gratitude and respect for the professionalism, commitment and courage of our Armed Forces, past, present and future.  Put simply, they are the reason that we can live all live peacefully at home.”
