The Council in conjunction with partner organisations (wildlife trusts etc.) or volunteer groups may carry out surveys of the local countryside in order to determine the diversity and density of flora and fauna within the local environment.
Local Agenda 21 involves people and organisations in working up a shared strategy for their area for the 21st Century, based on the principles of sustainable development. Forum 21 is the name of the local community group in West Somerset concerned with Local Agenda 21.
Somerset County Council has prepared a report "A cleaner, healthier, better Somerset: a local agenda 21 vision for Somerset". The report is the result of a series of consultations with Somerset people and organisations over several years and it incorporates other strategies like the Local Transport Plan and Health Improvement Programme.
Forum 21 is a member of the Local Strategic Partnership for West Somerset (called the Exmoor Coast and Countryside Partnership), in order to incorporate local sustainable issues, in the planning of the community (in accordance with the Local Government Act 1999).
