On 1 April 2019, we will become Somerset West and Taunton Council – a new district council, serving the residents, businesses and communities of both Taunton Deane and West Somerset.
The creation of the new council will save at least £500,000 each year; money that can be used to help protect vital services which are important to our communities.
Taunton Deane and West Somerset councils will remain as separate, sovereign bodies and operate as usual until 31 March 2019. Meanwhile all 84 Taunton Deane and West Somerset Members have joined under Shadow Authority arrangements.
The Shadow Authority for Somerset West and Taunton is responsible for ensuring that all necessary measures are in place to allow for the functions and powers to transfer to the new council on 1 April 2019, in particular:
Adopting policy and strategy
Setting budget and precept to operate from 1 April 2019
Producing a constitution and governance model
Appointing statutory officers and making provisions for the transfer of staff, assets and liabilities to the new Council
Commissioning an Independent Remuneration Panel to produce a scheme of members’ allowances
