Political Structure

Following the elections on 7 May 2015 West Somerset Council is made up of 28 Councillors (also known as Members) who are elected for 4 years.

The Conservative Group currently has overall control of the Council.

Political Structure of West Somerset Council is as follows (as at 3 September 2018):

  • 19 Conservatives
  • 3 Independents
  • 3 Liberal Democrat
  • 2 UKIP
  • 1 Labour

Who's Who

The Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Council are appointed on a yearly basis at the Annual meeting of the Council held in May.

The Leader of the Council is appointed by full council for a fixed term of 4 years at the first Annual meeting following the district council elections. The leader will appoint cabinet members, including the position of deputy leader; such appointments are usually announced at the annual meeting.
