Community Safety

West Somerset Council together with the

  • Police
  • Fire and Rescue Service
  • Clinical Commissioning Group
  • Probation Service
  • Other local authorities in Somerset

share a legal duty to work in partnership to tackle crime and disorder together with anti social behaviour; drug and alcohol abuse; re-offending and environmental harm.
There is also a statutory duty to collaborate with the Police and Crime Commissioner for Avon and Somerset.

Other partners who are involved with this work locally include Magna Housing West Somerset and Exmoor National Park Authority.

We deliver these duties through membership of the Safer Somerset Community Safety Partnership which includes representatives from the other District and County Councils together with the bodies listed above.

Our work is focussed by an annual strategic assessment of the issues affecting the County. From this assessment a Community Safety Partnership Plan is produced detailing the work we will undertake to tackle these priorities.

West Somerset has very low crime levels and these have been steadily falling over previous years although the effect of the economic downturn are having an effect on crime across the Country.

However, the perception of crime and anti social behaviour does not match these crime levels. Work is ongoing to provide reassurance to residents and visitors alike.

For more information about crime in your local area, please visit this Crime Statistics page.

Part of the work includes the investigation of criminal offences and anti social behaviour and could, potentially, include the use of surveillance. This work is covered by the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act and access to a copy of our policy is shown on the right hand side of this page.
